How Much Does SEO Cost per Month in 2026?

What SEO providers actually charge, from three industry surveys: monthly retainers, hourly rates, local SEO, and what each budget realistically buys.

Most SEO pricing articles are written by an agency that wants you to land on its own number. This one uses published survey data instead, with links to each survey so you can check the figures yourself, and then explains what the money buys at each level.

Short version. The most common small-business SEO retainer is $500–$2,000 a month. Providers in the United States and Canada charge noticeably more than the global figures suggest, and hourly rates cluster between $50 and $150 an hour. Below about $500 a month there is very little room for real work; above $2,000 you should expect a written, countable scope.

What the Surveys Say

Three surveys of SEO providers are worth knowing. None is perfect, and each is described with its limits below, but they point in the same direction.

Ahrefs: 439 SEO Providers

Ahrefs polled 439 SEO service providers. The most popular monthly retainer was $501–$1,000, charged by 20.4% of respondents, and 42.8% charged somewhere between $501 and $2,000. Looking only at the United States and Canada, 79.1% charged at least $1,001 a month. The most popular hourly rate was $75–$100.

Two cautions. The article was last updated in 2024 and does not say when the survey ran, so treat the figures as a few years old. And its headline average of $2,917 a month is calculated from the top of each price bracket, so it overstates what a typical business pays.

SE Ranking and Duda: 260 Agencies

SE Ranking and Duda surveyed 260 agencies, 94% of which serve small or local businesses. 64% offered monthly retainers below $1,000, and 30% charged under $500. Only 15% charged more than $2,000. The regional gap is large: 22% of agencies in the United States and Canada charged over $2,000 a month, against 9% in Europe, and 40% of North American agencies charged more than $125 an hour, against 6% in Europe.

This sample leans toward very small agencies, and the authors note it may not be statistically significant.

Backlinko: 300+ SEO Professionals

Backlinko surveyed over 300 SEO professionals and puts the average monthly cost at $1,000–$2,500, with hourly work averaging $50–$100. It reports in brackets rather than medians and does not publish its method, so treat it as a cross-check rather than a primary source.

The Three Ways SEO Is Priced

  1. Monthly retainer. By far the most common model for ongoing work. You pay a fixed amount each month for a defined set of deliverables. The thing to insist on is the word defined.
  2. Hourly. Common for consultants and for one-off advice. $50–$150 an hour covers most of the survey data, with North American rates toward the top. Useful when you have someone in-house doing the work and want a second opinion.
  3. Per project. Audits, site migrations and one-off fixes. Ahrefs found $2,501–$5,000 the most popular project fee. A project makes sense when the problem is finite, such as a technical audit before a redesign.

What Each Budget Realistically Buys

Under $500 a Month

At a typical North American hourly rate this is a handful of hours a month, which is not enough to write content, fix technical problems and report on results. What is often sold at this price is an automated report and bulk directory submissions. If your budget is here, you will usually get more from learning the basics and doing them yourself.

$500–$1,500 a Month

Enough for a small business in one location or a focused service area: technical fixes, optimizing your most important pages, your Google Business Profile, and a small amount of new content each month. This band contains the most popular retainer bracket in both the Ahrefs and SE Ranking surveys.

$1,500–$5,000 a Month

Competing across a whole city, several services or a product catalog. More content, new landing pages, competitor tracking, and time spent earning links. The deliverables at this level should be countable; if they are not, ask why.

$5,000 a Month and Up

National campaigns, large e-commerce catalogs and crowded markets. SE Ranking found only 2% of its agencies charging over $5,000 a month; Backlinko's figure for providers in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia is 19%, which says as much about who each survey reached as about the market. Either way, it is rarely the right starting point for a small business.

What Local SEO Costs

None of the surveys above measures local SEO as a separate price, so be wary of anyone quoting a precise "local SEO" average. In practice local SEO is the lower end of the same retainer ranges, because the work is narrower: your Google Business Profile, reviews, consistent business listings, and location or service pages. For a single location, $500–$1,500 a month is a reasonable range to compare quotes against. Our local SEO checklist covers the parts you can do yourself for free.

What Moves the Price

  • Competition. A plumber in a small town and a personal-injury lawyer in a large city need completely different amounts of work to rank.
  • Where the site starts. A site with crawl errors, slow pages and thin service pages needs fixing before anything else can work.
  • Content volume. Writing is usually the largest line item. More posts and more landing pages cost more, and should.
  • Links. Earning links takes time. Buying them is cheaper and breaks Google's spam policies, which is why a cheap quote that includes "link packages" is a warning, not a bargain.
  • Region. The survey data shows North American providers charging substantially more than European ones for the same kind of work.

What Ours Costs

Our SEO packages are published in full, month-to-month, with no lock-in:

  • Essentials, $750 a month. A technical audit in month one, then a running fix queue; 10 pages optimized; Google Business Profile set up and maintained; 2 blog posts a month; monthly Search Console and Analytics figures. For sites up to 50 pages.
  • Growth, $1,500 a month. Everything in Essentials, plus 25 pages optimized with schema across the site, 4 posts a month, a new service or location page each month, 10 citation sources a month and competitor tracking. For sites up to 150 pages.
  • Custom, $2,500 a month. Scope agreed up front for multi-location, multi-service or e-commerce sites, with 8 posts a month and a monthly call.

Those sit inside the survey ranges above, and the point of publishing them is that you can compare any other quote against a written scope rather than a sales call.

Red Flags at Any Price

  • A guaranteed ranking or a guaranteed number one position. Nobody controls Google.
  • "Link packages" or a fixed number of backlinks for a fixed fee.
  • A long minimum contract before any work has been delivered.
  • Reports full of activity with no rankings, traffic or inquiries in them. Our guide to SEO reporting that means something shows what a useful one contains.
  • Nobody can tell you which of your pages currently rank, and for what.

Before You Spend Anything

Find out where you actually stand first. Our free Findable scan checks whether Google and AI assistants can find and read your site and lists the worst problems, with no signup. If the fixes are small, working down that list yourself may be the cheapest option of all, and if they are not, you will be able to judge a quote properly.

Common Questions

How Much Does SEO Cost per Month?

Most small-business SEO retainers fall between $500 and $2,000 a month. Surveys by Ahrefs and SE Ranking found the most common retainers below $1,000 globally, while providers in the United States and Canada tend to charge more, with most charging over $1,000 a month in the Ahrefs data.

Is $500 a Month Enough for SEO?

For a single location in a low-competition market it can cover the basics, but it buys only a few hours of work a month at typical North American rates. At that budget, learning the fundamentals and doing some of the work yourself often gets better results.

How Much Does Local SEO Cost?

No major survey prices local SEO separately. It usually sits at the lower end of normal retainer ranges, roughly $500 to $1,500 a month for a single location, because the work is narrower: your Google Business Profile, reviews, listings and location pages.

What Is the Average Hourly Rate for SEO?

Most survey data puts SEO hourly rates between $50 and $150. Ahrefs found $75 to $100 the most popular rate, Backlinko puts the average at $50 to $100, and SE Ranking found 40% of agencies in the United States and Canada charging more than $125 an hour.

Why Do SEO Prices Vary So Much?

Because the work varies: how competitive your market is, how much needs fixing on your site, how much content is written, whether links are earned, and where the provider is based. Compare quotes by their written deliverables, not the monthly number alone.
